What is it?

OpenOffice is an excellent free software suite that can replace Microsoft Office. It can run on most versions of Windows and Linux.

OpenOffice contains the following programs:

  • Writer - a fully equipped word processor or  desktop publisher (replaces Microsoft Word and Publisher)
  • Calc - a fully equipped spreadsheet program (replaces Microsoft Excel)
  • Impress - a presentation maker (replaces Microsoft PowerPoint)
  • Draw - create a simple sketch or detailed plan using this fully-featured graphics program (replaces Microsoft Paint)
  • Base - a fully equiped database program (replaces Microsoft Access)

One of the key benefits to using OpenOffice is that it is compatible with Microsoft Office files. This means that you can open documents created by Microsoft Office with OpenOffice, and also save files created in Open Office that can be opened by Microsoft Office. This means that you should always have access to your work, wherever and whenever you need it.

If you have a PC at home with Microsoft Works you will appreciate how frustrating it is to produce documents that Microsoft Office cannot open, by using OpenOffice you avoid this program, and avoid the cost of either Microsoft Office or Microsoft Works!

How do I access it?

OpenOffice can be downloaded for free from the OpenOffice website. It can be installed on a Windows or Linux PC, or even run from a USB memory pen.
