Mind maps, sometimes known as spider diagrams, are a useful way of organising information or ideas. You can use mind maps for:

  • making notes during a lesson
  • planning for an essay
  • illustrating a process
  • brain storming
  • revising
The benefit of using a computer to produce a mind map is that it can be far more complex than a paper mind map, and you can add, remove or move information around at any time. Mind maps can also be used to show the structure of a website, these can often be generated automatically depending on what website builder you have used, and will automatically update each time you add new content to your website.

There are several free mind mapping programs covered here (links are on the left hand side as usual), some that you can access through the internet, others that you can download and install onto your PC. I recommend you have a look at sthem, pick your favourite and start mind mapping. Once you know one program well you can start recommending it to students safe in the knowledge that you can offer help and support.
